5th Fleet Abandons Bahrain

Long War: There are preliminary reports that the US Navy has abandoned its headquarters in Bahrain as the rebellion there becomes more like a civil war. The purpose of the 5th Fleet is to contain Iran. The Shiite rebels trying to overthrow the monarchy in Bahrain are backed by Iran. In fact Iran actually claims Bahrain as a province. Obviously then the rebels are very much enemies of the US. One would assume that the US is doing everything in its power to stop Bahrain's Shiite rebels. The opposite is true, the US is warning the Saudi expeditionary force that is now in Bahrain not to fire on the pro-Iranian rebels. The Saudis are ignoring the US and instead are waging war against the rebels. If the preliminary report is true, if the Navy really is abandoning its Bahrain base, then we have a situation similar to the US Army being chased out of Saigon (tail tucked) by North Vietnam.
In Libya, Gaddafi is destroying the Rage Rebels at a much faster pace than anyone expected. It is very hard to guess what the CIA has done in Libya but there were initial shipments of weapons delivered to the rebels and then, when they started losing, weapon shipments appear to have stopped. So it looks like the US at one point was halfway supporting the rebels but then changed its mind and stopped all support.
Simply put, Obama has become a Jimmy Carter type President with a confused and weak foreign policy. The stock market is focused on the Japanese nuclear reactor crisis and has been ignoring the President's huge foreign policy blunders. The Japanese crisis is indeed bad but America losing the Long War is long term much worse.

This is the nightmare scenario: Iran is convinced that Obama is a total paper tiger and goes to war with Saudi Arabia over Bahrain and then events prove the Iranians correct and the US does not support Saudi Arabia. But maybe if the shit really hits the fan, then Obama will grow a set. This is the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis scenario.
Let's take a minute and review what Kennedy did back in the Cold War... A CIA trained group of ragtag freedom fighters invaded Cuba. The plan handed to Kennedy by Eisenhower had a force of Marines waiting as back-up if the freedom fighters failed. They did fail. Kennedy then cancelled the whole operation and the Marines did not back up the freedom fighters and did not invade Cuba. Because of Kennedy's loss of nerve the Soviets began building nuclear missile silos in Cuba and would have targeted Washington DC with nuclear weapons. Kennedy responded by throwing the US Navy around Cuba, turning Soviet ships back on the high seas and test firing ICBMs over the USSR, backing the Soviets down. Something like this needs to happen today to avert disaster. That something could be the US aggressively backing our Saudi allies. So we are back to our question of how big Obama's stones are.
